Alone and in the Zone.

We’ve all been there, too much going on in one room whether it’s a busy day at the gym, friends talking to you, or just a long damn day at work. Point is, there’s too much mental stimulus right now but you want to focus.

Coach Risley here, we’re talking about zoning in during training today and staying focused during our movements. Some days, there could be a lot of stimuli around you mentally that’s taking away from the stimulus you could be localizing on your quads or core, where it matters! Believe it or not, the amount of focus you have is finite and if you aren’t gathered in one place, you’re just spreading yourself thin and it’s just not efficient.

Have you ever done a set of an exercise while having a conversation with someone? It almost always takes you longer to feel any type of stimulus to the muscle you were targeting.

Here are a few tips and tricks to solve this common issue:

1. Controlling your heart rate. Quite possibly the hardest one to do but being able to calm yourself down in a busy environment or just coming off an engaging conversation is not easy. I would suggest taking a few deep nasal breaths to help.

2. Ask yourself why you’re here. If you’re here to become stronger, then get the job done. A great way to do this is by giving yourself a pep talk and general cues that help you think about what you need to do in order to execute a perfect set.

3. Vision control. There's always that person that’s literally looking at the whole gym before they focus on themselves, this is not the ideal situation to be in as it drastically increases our mental stimuli. Now, I know what you’re thinking, “just close your eyes?”. Well, that’s not an ideal option since our vision directly correlates to balancing when we are performing our exercise. What I would suggest is to quite literally “blank out” and focus on the task at hand, there are so many things to be thinking about that will improve the performance of your exercise so don’t waste your thoughts on looking around the gym.

How focused are your workouts?

  • I am always stone-cold focused.

  • I usually get a little distracted, but I refocus easily.

  • I don't feel any of my exercises, I can't refocus easily.

  • I don't remember the last time I focused while working out!
